Valerie Smart

I'm the president of Old Mutual Asset Managers and Old Mutual Group Services in Bermuda. I was the very first employee of the Bermuda office and I've been with Old Mutual for 12 years, the last eight years as president.

My work involves overseeing investment, marketing, financial, administrative, legal and corporate secretarial services provided to group companies and funds, the development and implementation of new business strategies and group rationalisations, and serving as a director on all the Bermuda boards. We have little face-to-face contact with our customers and service providers, as most are not based in Bermuda.

Bermuda is only 22 square miles, with a sub-tropical climate, spectacular beaches and coral reefs. On the island, there is a restriction of one car per household.

I love the great outdoors - I enjoy running, tennis and squash in Bermuda and skiing and hiking outside Bermuda.

I'm a wine lover - I was treasurer of the Bermuda Wine Circle for more than a decade.
