Jim Sutcliffe
Chief Executive Officer

Jim Sutcliffe is Chief Executive of Old Mutual plc. 

Jim joined the Board of Old Mutual plc on 24 January 2000 with responsibility for all of the Group's life businesses, building on the track record of its primary business in South Africa and developing its interests around the world.

Before joining Old Mutual, Jim was deputy Chairman of Liberty International plc. Prior to that he was Chief Executive of Prudential UK where he was responsible for all of the Group's retail and corporate pensions activities. He led the creation of Prudential UK's banking arm that was opened in October 1996 and oversaw the acquisition of Scottish Amicable a year later.

Prior to joining Prudential UK in January 1992 as Deputy Managing Director of the Prudential Home Service Division, Jim was Chief Operating Officer at Jackson National Life in Michigan, USA. 


Jonathan Nicholls
Chief Financial Officer

 Jonathan Nicholls is Group Finance Director of Old Mutual plc.  He joined the company on 1 November 2006 from Hanson plc where he had held the role of Group Finance Director since 1998. 

Jonathan began his career as an auditor at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Company before moving into the financial services industry in 1983 as Chief Accountant for P S Refson & Company.  He joined the Abbey National Building Society in 1985 as Manager, Financial Services, and held a number of different roles within the Abbey, culminating in 1994 when he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive, Abbey National Treasury Services plc.  He joined Hanson in 1996 as Treasurer and Associate Director.

Jonathan holds a BA in Economics and Accountancy from Manchester University and is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  He is a fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers and also a PMD (Programme for Management Development) from Harvard Business School.

Jonathan lives in the UK with his wife and daughter.  His hobbies include sailing, snowboarding, motorcycling, mountain biking and food and wine.

Julian Roberts

B.A.,FCA, MCT, Julian Roberts is Chief Executive Officer for Skandia. He joined the Old Mutual Group in August 2000 as Group Finance Director.

Julian qualified as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1983, and moved into the insurance industry, working for C E Heath, in 1987.

In 1993 he became Director and Chief Financial Officer of Aon UK Holdings Limited.  Whilst at Aon he led the due diligence process and successful purchase and integration of four major insurance broking businesses. 

Julian left Aon in 1998 to join Sun Life & Provincial Holdings plc as its Group Finance Director prior to its acquisition of Guardian Royal Exchange plc.  He was involved in the financing of this transaction and its integration.

Bertil Hult


Bertil Hult
Chief Executive Officer, Nordic

Bertil Hult was born in 1956 in Stockholm. He graduated from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1981 and is an officer in the Swedish Navy reserves.

Over the next few years, Mr Hult was active in building up and developing the treasury functions of multinational companies, working in the treasury departments of Swedish Match and Ovako Steel.

Between 1987 and 1989, Bertil Hult was responsible for fixed-income products at Handelsbanken in Stockholm. Following this, he returned to a position as Head of Finance for the finance company Independent.

In 1992 the Nordic investment bank Carnegie recruited Mr Hult, initially as assistant head of the Corporate Finance department. Between 1993-95, when Carnegie's ownership structure changed and Singer & Friedlander became principal owners, he served as CFO, after which he took responsibility for the newly formed Asset Management & Private Banking business. This business unit comprised operations in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Luxembourg, and included asset management companies, fund companies, insurance brokerages, unit-linked assurance companies and banking operations. Mr Hult joined the executive management in 1993 and was one of the principals responsible for Carnegie's stock market introduction in 2001.

After nearly 12 years with Carnegie, Mr Hult left the firm in 2005 and became the managing partner of the Swedish law firm Vinge. Vinge is a market-leading firm focusing on mergers & acquisitions, stock market-related transactions, and banking & finance.

Nick Poyntz-Wright


Nick Poyntz-Wright

Nick is the Chief Executive Officer of the Skandia UK Group.

He joined Skandia in 1988 as an Actuary having worked at Friends Provident since gaining a BSc1st class honours degree in Economics & Statistics at Southampton University. In 1995 he became Appointed Actuary of Skandia Life before joining the Board in 1996.

He took over responsibility for Skandia Life's International Division in 2000 before reaching his position as Managing Director of Skandia Life and Skandia MultiFUNDS in 2001. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Skandia UK Group.

Nick holds Board positions with Skandia Life Assurance (Holdings) Limited, Skandia Life Assurance Company Limited, Skandia MultiFUNDS Limited and IFA Services Holdings Company Plc. He is also a member of IFA Promotions Limited

Rafael Galdon

Chief Executive of ELAM

Rafael Galdon is Chief Executive of ELAM. He joined Skandia in 1998 as CEO of Skandia Spain, also holding the position of Chairman for Skandia Mexico, Colombia and Chile.
 
Prior to joining Skandia, Rafael was Chef Operating officer for Santander Investment where he bought and re-organised six commercial banks in Latin America. Prior to this he was a member of the advisory board of CNMV (Securities Supervisory Board). Also, he was Vice President for Banco Santander and Senior Vice President at Intercaser S.A. de Seguros y Reaseguros (Skandia).
 
Earlier on in his career Rafael was a Nuclear Physician for the Nuclear Energy Research Institute.

Tom Turpin

Tom Turpin
Chief Executive Officer, Old Mutual Asset Management and interim CEO of Old Mutual (US)

Tom Turpin serves as interim President and CEO of Old Mutual US, the US-based business of global financial services organization, Old Mutual plc. In this role, Tom's responsibilities include overseeing three lines of business: an institutional asset management business, Old Mutual Asset Management, a life insurance and annuities business, Old Mutual Financial Network, and a retail asset management business, Old Mutual Capital.

Tom's primary focus is on the continued evolution of Old Mutual as a premier savings and wealth management company, building innovative investment and insurance products for investors in all life phases - from accumulation, through protection, and eventually as a source of income during retirement.

Tom is a member of the board of directors of several affiliated companies and investment fund structures. He also participates as one of six executives on the Old Mutual Group Executive Committee, where he is actively involved in the development and execution of the overall business strategy of the Old Mutual group.

Previously, Tom served as the Chief Operating Officer of Old Mutual US. As COO, Tom's responsibilities included oversight over the trust company, the operations and technology areas for both the asset management and life insurance organizations as well as the asset management affiliate relationship management function. Prior to that, Mr. Turpin was Managing Director and Head of Defined Contribution Plans, as well as Chief Administrative Officer for Institutional Management, Defined Contribution, and Retail Businesses of Putnam Investments. Prior to joining Putnam, he held a variety of leadership positions with The Boston Company, primarily in the Master Trust & Custody Division, from 1982 to 1993. Tom holds an Accounting degree from Assumption College.

Bob Head

Bob Head

Since his appointment to Old Mutual plc as Group Strategy Director in February 2003, Bob Head has overseen the group's work on potential acquisitions as well as had 18 months as the Group Human Resources Director.

He currently holds the position of Group Director: Southern Africa. He was also seconded to Nedbank for six months in 2004 as finance director where he was heavily involved in the turnaround of the bank and the rights issue.  He then led Old Mutual's black economic empowerment project, announced in April 2005. He is a director of Mutual & Federal, Nedbank and Old Mutual Life Assurance Company (SA) Limited.

Before joining Old Mutual, Bob was chief executive of smile.co.uk, the UK's most highly rated online bank. Prior to that he was Finance, Investment and Treasury director at egg.com which he co-founded.

Bob started his career with what is now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where spent nine years, initially as an auditor and then as a consultant on a variety of assignments. That was followed by seven years as a director of the international division at Prudential.

Bob is a UK qualified chartered accountant, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and Fellow of the Institute of Bankers.

 

Paul Hanratty

Paul Hanratty is Managing Director of Old Mutual South Africa. He joined Old Mutual in 1984 and has since worked in a variety of areas, from the Actuarial Department to Employee Benefits and Product Development before being appointed as Assistant General Manager (Strategic Development) in 1997 and shortly thereafter progressed to General Manager (Finance and Actuarial). Paul was promoted to Executive General Manager (Individual Life - Middle Income Market) in March 2001 and in December 2003 became Deputy Managing Director, Old Mutual South Africa where he had responsibility for Retail Product, Marketing and Distribution.

Paul was educated at Allan Wilson High School in Zimbabwe and holds a B.Bus.Sci (Hons) from the University of Cape Town. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Tom Boardman

Tom Boardman is Chief Executive of Nedbank Group.

Following the merger between Nedcor and BoE in July 2002, Tom was appointed Executive Director, responsible for Retail & Wealth Management, and in October 2003 he was appointed as Chief Executive of the group.  Tom joined BoE in 1986 as Senior Investment Manager and was appointed Executive Director in 1989.   He became Managing Director of BoE Merchant Bank in 1994 and Managing Director of BoE Bank in 1999, and in April 2000 he was appointed Chief Executive of the BoE group.
 
He matriculated in 1967 from Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg, and graduated with a BComm Law degree from Wits University.  He served articles with Deloittes in Johannesburg and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1974. His earlier career experience was at Anglo American Properties and at Sam Newmans, where he was part of a management buyout of the retail operations, which resulted in the establishment of Boardmans stores.   After growing the business to six retail stores, Boardmans was sold to the Pick 'n Pay group in 1986.
 
In what little spare time he has, Tom enjoys cycling (he rode his 24th Argus Cycle Tour in 2006), running, reading and philately.

Keith Kennedy

Keith Kennedy joined Mutual & Federal in 2000 to head the Commercial Business Division. In 2002 he was appointed Executive General Manager: Claims. He serves on the Board of Nedinsurance Company Limited and is also alternate director at the South African Insurance Association (SAIA). Prior to joining Mutual & Federal, Kennedy spent seventeen years at Guardian National where he had an illustrious career occupying senior positions in IT, Personal Lines business and Underwriting, culminating in his appointment as Director of Operations.

Steffen Gilbert

Steffen Gilbert joined Old Mutual in January 2008. Born in 1962, he matriculated at King Edward VII High School in 1980 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.

Mr Gilbert started his career in the Life/Pensions area of Ned-Equity (which later became Sage Life), after which he moved into reinsurance with the Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa. He held various management positions in Life and Property & Casualty, including the role of Appointed Actuary. In 1999, Mr Gilbert assumed the role of CEO for the company, looking after the group's interests in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. In 2003, he joined Santam as CEO and also played a leading role in the local insurance industry during that time.

 

Dean Richards

Dean Richards

Dean Richards is a senior life assurance executive with experience in managing businesses and company start-ups.

After joining Old Mutual in 1984 Mr Richards held positions as client services manager for South Africa, regional general manager responsible for marketing and distribution of products in the Western Province as well as strategic planning manager and general manager for the Investment Frontiers business.

He was managing director of Fairbairn Capital from 2001 to 2004. Fairbairn Capital is a retail investment business that was created to focus on the high-income market. This business was formed through the merging of three different businesses and became known in South Africa for its excellent client servicing and innovation.

As general manager of Broker Distribution at Old Mutual from 2004 to 2006, his primary function was to market and distribute the group's products and services to all third party distribution channels throughout South Africa.

During this time, Mr Richards was the director of numerous distribution companies in which Old Mutual is a key shareholder. He was also an Old Mutual representative on various committees of the South African Life Offices Association.

 

Andrew Black

Andrew Black
General Manager - Retail

In his role as General Manager of Skandia's Retail division, Andrew oversees all aspects of Skandia's platform business in Australia, which encompasses operations and distribution.

Prior to joining Skandia in January 2008, Andrew was General Manager - Private Bank, Margin Lending & Directshares at St. George Bank. He dramatically increased the profitability of all three businesses during his almost eight year tenure.

Under Andrew's management, St. George Margin lending was recognised as Margin Lender of the Year by Personal Investor magazine for the four consecutive years to 2007 and "Best of the Best" by Money magazine in 2007. Andrew also oversaw the successful acquisition and integration of HSBC Margin Lending in September 2006 and Deutsche Margin Lending in October 2001.

Previously, Andrew worked at Citibank in both London and Sydney across multiple retail banking roles.

 

 

John Gethin-Jones

John Gethin-Jones
General Manager

John Gethin-Jones joined Intech, Skandia's Investment and Consulting division, in January 2008 as General Manager. He is responsible for AU$29 billion (as at 31 December 2007) in assets under advice and management across both institutional and retail markets.

John has over 25 years experience in the financial services industry at a senior management level. Prior to joining Intech, John spent 17 years at Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), initially as Manager of Australian Equities before becoming General Manger of Global Equities in 2003. In this role he managed all listed equity exposures, both in Australia and internationally, with responsibility for three equity teams ¬with combined funds under management of AUD$39 billion.

John is a fellow of both the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a member of the IFSA Investment Board, the Financial Reporting Council, Standard and Poor's - Australian Stock Exchange Index Advisory Panel and the ASX Corporate Governance Council. John is also a certified Life Coach.

 

Gaurang Shah

Gaurang Shah is the Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance Limited.

At Kotak Life Insurance, Mr. Shah oversees developing new lines of businesses and leveraging the company's existing competencies and network to steer the Company on its ongoing growth path with even greater thrust.

Mr. Gaurang Shah is a Chartered Accountant and a Cost Accountant with a cumulative experience of 23 years primarily in financial services, several of those in building the retail finance business. He has also done his Company Secretary ship from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Mr. Gaurang Shah has been with the Kotak Group for over a decade. During his stint with the group, he has held different positions of great responsibility and juggled multiple tasks effectively.

Prior to Kotak Life Insurance, Mr. Shah was Head of Retail Asset Finance Group of Kotak Mahindra Bank and the joint ventures of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Ford Credit for funding automobiles.
