HOW WE OPERATE

 

Our businesses are empowered to decide on the products, pricing and distribution options that best meet local customers' needs. They are encouraged to grow strong local brands where appropriate but these have to be aligned to and endorsed by the Old Mutual brand. At the centre we provide a group-wide framework for governance, capital management and risk management. This sets common parameters for the local businesses. We also encourage knowledge sharing and best practice across our businesses.

Right across our business we concentrate on investment products and solutions that meet the needs of our customers, both individuals and their advisers. While those needs might change as economies and demographics evolve, underpinning them always is the requirement for choice and value for money. Our decentralised, close-to-the-customer model, enables us to fulfil that requirement.

In the UK and Europe we have developed a leading open-architecture platform. This gives customers access to a wide range of investment funds run by third-party fund managers as well as our own in-house fund managers. It also enables us to develop packaged investment solutions, including multi-manager portfolios, and so maximises the potential returns for our customers.

In the US and South Africa our asset management businesses operate on the multi-boutique model. With an affiliate structure, each boutique operates independently, with an owner-driven entrepreneurial culture, pursuing independent investment strategies supported by their core capabilities. Customers therefore have access to a broad range of products whilst benefiting from the economies of scale and best-practice capabilities that we provide to our affiliates.

Customers can contact us directly or through their financial advisers - our distribution channels are selected to be appropriate to local market conditions.

Corporate responsibility is an important issue for us. Our businesses are expected to meet the needs of their customers whilst respecting ethical values, people, communities and the natural environment.
