The Old Mutual 'On The Money' programme is a fun, accessible way to learn more about finance, from personal budgeting to money personality. The aim of the programme is to provide free, simple financial education for the mass market across Africa
On The Money began in 2005 as a television programme in South Africa, where the vast majority of Old Mutual's employees are based, targeting low to middle income consumers. The programme, based on the behaviours of South Africa's Big Five animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), illustrates how to implement sound financial management principles. In 2007, the programme was published as workbooks and facilitated in workshops across South Africa in all the official languages by Old Mutual financial education facilitators. The programme has been revamped to include two modules, which come with a basic and an advanced workbook, as well as a digital and radio component to increase reach and accessibility. The workshops are delivered to groups such as stokvels, burial societies, Unions, companies, SMEs or communities interested in empowering themselves with financial management skills.
Since implementation, the programme has directly impacted almost 400,000 individuals who have taken part in workshops, with a further reach of 15 million people through radio and digital programmes. More recently, the programme has expanded across southern Africa to Zimbabwe, Namibia, Swaziland, Malawi and as far north as Kenya and Nigeria, continuing to target low to middle income consumers. The programme is open to all and has proved a popular addition in these new regions
